Mountain View has been my home for most of my adult life. Early on, I engaged in a range of activities related to my children, such as being a girl scout leader and being active in the local PTA. Later, I put my professional experience to work through serving on the Mountain View Environmental Planning Commission (EPC), the board of the Santa Clara League of Conservation Voters, and the board of the Los Altos-Mountain View Area League of Women Voters. It was my honor to serve on Mountain View’s City Council from 2015 to 2019 and particularly as Mayor in 2016.
In 2019-2020 when I was off Council, I served on a number of Boards and Commissions such as Alta Housing, Carbon Free Mountain View and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission. I was reelected in 2020 and am so pleased to get to serve as Mayor again in 2024.
By profession, I’m a Civil Engineer who has specialized in water resources management. I realized very early in my career that the best political decisions must involve people with sound environmental knowledge. The last 20 years of my career were devoted to flood protection and environmental restoration. In 2017, I retired from the Santa Clara Valley Water District.
Expected sea level rise makes flood protection more critical. Serving on Council gives me the opportunity to protect our community by making sure that the sea level rise protections we need will be constructed. That is happening! These projects are also an opportunity to provide good jobs and green the economy.
During my first term on Council, I served on committees where my professional experience was particularly relevant like the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority, the Energy & Environment Committee of the National League of Cities, Water Now Alliance, Santa Clara County’s Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission, and the Advanced Water Re-use Committee between Valley Water and the cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto.
I’ve always found collaboration to be powerful, so during my first term I was active on the Santa Clara County Cities Association. I served as the representative for Mountain View in 2016, the Legislative Action chair in 2017 and the First Vice President in 2018. Currently I serve on the Selection Committee that recommends regional appointments.
This year, 2024, I have the enormous honor of serving as the Mayor of Mountain View. Since I also served as Mayor in 2016, I know how much fun it is and how much work it entails.
I currently serve on a number of City Council committees and regional and national boards, including:
- Carbon Free Mountain View Board
- San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission
- National League of Cities Policy Committee on Energy, Environment & Natural Resources.
- Council Neighborhoods Committee
- Council Environmental Sustainability Committee
- Council Appointments Review Committee
- Council Policy and Procedures Committee
- Santa Clara County Cities Association Selection Committee
- Santa Clara County Cities Association Legislative Action Committee
Like most people in Mountain View, I migrated here from somewhere else. Just a year after graduating from Mount Holyoke College with majors in Geology & American History I started graduate school at UC Berkeley. I earned a masters in Civil Engineering. I spent the second semester of my junior year at Princeton where I met my husband, Steve Longcor. Our children, Abby and Ben Longcor, both live nearby and are diligently working to get me re-elected.
